The
Saturday, April 25, 2009,
edition of the Oregonian may have finally figured it out.
The front
page
actually talked positive about real estate and how the time may be
right to buy
a home in Oregon.
WHAT? The newspaper is
saying that people should buy? Are they crazy?
This
isn’t negative news! This doesn’t sell papers! At least
that is what
they have
been telling us for the past 4 years… that real estate is horrible. It
was horrible
if you were a buyer, it was then horrible if you were a seller, but
they never said
a positive thing about it.
Well, today, they are
telling people to buy because rates are at record
lows
and the prices are also. I think the Oregonian may not
survive the next
10
years, but maybe, just maybe, being nice to the people that paid for
your
classified ads and kept you in business should be spoken of in a
positive
light.
Good luck Oregonian, but I have a feeling if it continues exactly as it is today, your paper might be going the way of the Dodo bird and will never be heard from again.

What if there was a way you could search the MLS for FREE just like Realtors
Now you can access the MLS using similar tools as Realtors. You are in control of what you want to search for, and you can search the MLS at your leisure. The information you submit in the form below can also be used to put you on an automated system where you'll be emailed all homes that meet your search criteria. You'll get internet access to a website that includes pictures, prices, and addresses to real estate that's listed in the MLS!

Hello Todd,
I totally agree with you, if they keep doing that, they may not last much longer. Probably their copy approval manager was on vacation or emergency leave. LOL
The media is all about negative stuff, even positive issues are flipped to the negative side.
Todd: From my memory in reading the Oregonian... I thought it was a pretty good newspaper. With Seattle losing their Post-Intelligencer... I think it is even more important that the Oregonian stay in business. Take care...
LOL Todd! I'm in COMPLETE agreement with you! It's about time that a bit of positive is found in print! Do you think that this postive print could help the economy?! YES! Do you think that if they continue to downplay the recovery process that THEY could go out of business?! Do they EVER think that they're having a hand in putting small businesses out of business? Who will pay for their ads when everyone is out of business?
I really don't think that they realize what they're doing. It's been drilled into their journalistic heads for YEARS that negative sells--you need to pepper it with positive to keep YOURSELVES in business! Probably a bit MORE pepper would help their cause these days as it looks like they're floundering a bit!!
Okay, I'm off my soapbox!!! Sorry--I just had a debate today with someone about the paper--they just couldn't get that they 'distorted' the truth and put a negative spin on some very positive numbers last week. I wasted about 20 minutes trying to explain it to them!
Todd, Sad but true, traditional newspapers are heading down the road to extinction....
Martin - That is exactly what this paper loves to do and over the past 5 years they have lost over 60% of their readership because of it.
Karen - It used to be, then a new editor came in about 10 years ago I believe and the news paper hasn't been the same since.
Debe - tell us how you really feel... LOL If you ever want a soapbox to stand on, I'll gladly pull one out for you!
Paul - They wouldn't have to, but they are so negative and one sided, they can't make it, they forgot how to debate.
Todd - Consider yourself lucky. I don't get the local paper, haven't in some time. Journalism seems to be a lost art and I suppose that's due in some part to us, as consumers. Your comment back to Paul says it all and The Oregonian isn't alone in that practice. I do hope they stay in biz, yet that's up to them and the public that feeds them.
Todd, Newspapers all over the country are folding (no pun intended) and yet it's all about the bad news. It will be interesting to see the fate of the Cleveland Plain Dealer one year from now.
It is almost like they want bad news and when they find something good they need to throw a negative twist to it thinking that it will sell papers.
Good morning Todd,
I have been saying for the longest time that the media needs to change their tone of what is going on the the marketplace. Now it looks like there is at least one paper that has gotten off of their butts and found something positive to say about the RE marketplace.
They want our money in the form of classified ads but then want to beat us over the head with the other hand. Go figure.
Todd - The only newspapers I read are usually on the weekend and how funny that our local paper stated in its real estate section yesterday "Increased Activity Shows The Spring Market Has Arrived." I almost fell off the chair.....no more doom & gloom and an actual positive outlook....Do ya think they might be feeling the pains of a "little" revenue loss from the lack of advertising due to all their recent negativity about the market?
Hi Todd! You know, I appreciate that! I don't often step up on a soapbox but, this is a passion--that and non-handicapped folks using the handicapped spaces!! ;-)
Have a great day...
Todd,
Aren't the newspapers amazing? I'm constantly being bombarded with negativity-nice to see something positive.
Hi Todd...the News people are in trouble, TV Stations are closing, News papers are shutting down..Self Inflected...mmm. I personaly have been asking our newspaper to write human interest stories, their response was... they do not sell stories..Tell that to Oprah. I canceled my paper delivery last November, and I no longer miss reading the Doom and Gloom, and yes I understand they are all saying it's the time to buy, sorry I won't be back I blog and tell my clients it a Good time to buy with our record low interest rates and great home choices.
A local Radio Station near me in Bellingham, Washington, 104.3 has been doing public announcement throughout the day, to let people know there are banks lending, car dealers selling cars, homes are selling and that there 90% employed in the Pacific NW and a high percent of the public are paying their mortgage payments...Good on Them! I listen to them in my car daily and they have my support by telling everyone about the local economy in their city with their public announcements throughout the day:O))
Cheers, thanks for sharing your thoughts :O)
Todd, I would put my money on the housing market surviving and not the newspaper industry.
Todd --- here's hoping that the Oregonian stays in business ---- it is so refreshing to hear that a newspaper is giving positive news.
Jason - I hope they stay in the biz also as I think print media is very important to society, but they need to learn to tell both sides of the story and also to be more positive.
Barb - I think we are going to see many more go under, just like the banks in the next couple years.
Terry - Maybe they are figuring out that thought process got them to where they are today...
Don - Exactly! I haven't spent money on print adverting in over a year and the one time I did, it was because I was trying something to see what response I would get.
