Moving to Beaverton Oregon? Should you hire a moving company… Well NO!

If you are thinking about moving to Beaverton, Oregon, or any where for that matter, if I think you should hire a moving company, my answer will, 90% of the time, be a big no! They charge a lot and they tend to arrive late with your stuff and your bill always seems to be larger than you agreed to.

But, that doesn’t mean I think you should do it alone. You don’t need a backache that will keep you out of work for the next six weeks… that won’t help any move be non-stressful!

Here is what I suggest to my clients moving cross country to help save them thousands in moving costs. Rent a moving truck yourself, say a large U-Haul, and then hire packers to pack your stuff in the truck. Then drive the truck cross country yourself, with your car on the back on a car carrier. This gets you and your stuff cross country when you want it to and you don’t have to pay a moving company to drive it.

Then, once you arrive, hire another packing company to unpack the truck for you. This will get you the same result as if you hired a large moving company to haul your stuff cross country, but at about 1/3 the cost.

Hi Todd, You should have seen me and my daughter in the yellow moving truck (I think it was Hertz) driving from Houston, TX to the University of Oregon in Eugene.  Looking back: What were we thinking?  Driving through those scary mountain passes was an experience I never want to have again.  I was afraid we might die but we made it there safely. LOL  I was much younger then.

Todd - great cost savings idea that can work for many folks. Having moved many times myself, I would now only opt for a moving company if I were moving a great distance. Been there, done that. But this can be a terrific solution for many people, and a good way to see the coutnry on the way.

I like the idea and have no fear of driving one of those big honkers. But are there "packing" and "unpacking" companies? Aren't those sub-services of a moving company?

We have moved with PODS, which is very similar. However, I once did drive cross-country and suffered a break-down where we had to transfer from Truck 1 to Truck 2 on the side of the road.

Hi Todd... I have seen more and more people doing exactly what you describe and it has worked wonderfully each time.  The best part is that your "stuff" arrives at the same time that you do!

Simple idea - makes perfect sense - plus you get to see some great sights while traveling across the country.

Todd, this is good advice for anyone who is bold enough to drive the "big honking truck" !!!

Todd:

This reminds me of when I moved to Kittery, Maine, via a Navy transfer.  It was my first time to arrive with a four year old, a 7 or 8 week old baby, and the husband was out to sea.  The goverment pays for the transfer, so they pack your stuff take it cross country and deliver it a few days later when you tell them to bring it over.

The moving company is also supposed to unpack.  Well, I asked the movers to please help me unpack, and they told me that they would unpack it but not put it away.  So withing 10 minutes they had unpacked my kitchen stuff and left it on the counters, the table, the chairs and the floor. Plates, glasses, silverware, pots and pans all over.... they refused to put it in the shelves.

Had I hired my own people, this would have never happened.   Tere

Todd - it is a very simple idea, but many people are afraid of getting stuck with their stuff alone and with no help.

OK, Todd!  This assumes they understand how to drive a big truck!  I can see myself somewhere along the Kansas Turnpike doing something really stupid!

This is some good advice sir and something I would have never thought of on my own.  Now I know why I like love AR.

Todd, See, that sounds way to easy to me. Why do we always hire someone to do what we need done when 80% of the time we can do it ourselves better, cheaper and easier?

Todd --- great advice --- I agree with those that say, great advice if you are not afraid of driving one of those large trucks.  A lot of folks would op to do this.

I understand a lot of you don't like to drive a big truck, but in a lot of cases you don't even need a very large truck. To Paul, because I like my back just where it is, I don't do the heavy lifting anymore!
