I’m
tired of hearing kids
on
the baseball field say that my hero is A-Rod, Jeter, or Soto,
or they
want to
be like Hanna Montana or any number of other stars out there right now.
But, why can’t we, as parents, be their heroes?
How can you become a hero to your children? Be there for them is the number one answer! Give them good morning hugs, or send them an e-card to their e-mail. (They won’t expect it and it will make them smile.) Become a coach for their sports team, I promise, if their friends respect you and look up to you, they will also.
I’m
amazed at how many kids
get into trouble in life because they people they call heroes are
nothing more
than over paid loud mouths. There are a lot of great
athletes or movie
stars
that I wouldn’t mind my kids calling heroes, but those usually aren’t
the ones
that are in the public eye and popular.
Get
involved with your kids today. Have family dinners, games nights,
and just outings
together and tell stories of when you were their age. They
really do
want to
know that you were just like them and that you went through the same
problems
they are having now. They will be much more likely to come to you if
you have a
problem if they know that they aren’t alone. There are many great
members here
in the rain that I know can be heroes to their children or their
grandchildren

Kids only realize their parents are ROCK STARS until they are parents.. if we really understood all our parents did for us when we were kids it would take the magic out of our partents.
Being a parent is not sexy or gory enough. You have great points but most parents have to work two jobs just to keep up with the Jones.
I often wondered if a law was passed that only one parent could work what would we do, bu tI know that would government forced parenting and that would lead to a whole new set of problems.
I think kids struggle to think of their parents as mentors because of the T.V. shows on today. Think about Disney for instance, rarely does the movie or T.V. show have both parents. If they have a mother, the father died and vice versa which most of the time is the case - mother out of the picture. We are making it easy for kids to seek others who they don't know.

Its tough Todd - not everyone has a Dad like you in their family - our children are truly blessed! `50% of families these days are headed by a single parent.........
Great point on Fathers day. We do focus on our job and one of our main jobs is raising your kids good advice.
Nice post, Todd. I especially like the part about coaching. We have been administrating Pop Warner locally for over 20 years. It is our community service in our minds. Coaches are so important, and even moreso in this day and age of split families. A good role model is often needed and the youth sports coach can fulfill that role while filling their charges with the values that are so important for a successful life. Many of our better coaches and administrators don't have children in the program - they are simply giving back. They know they are making a difference in lives. Thanks for the mindset - have a wonderful Father's Day.
Todd -- I bet you hit a lot of nails on the head with this one. I just wish, like you, that more children had as their heroes, their parents. Great post. BTW, congrats on staying on top of AR --- I watch you and Lenn ---
Todd - Nice post. My Dad was my hero. Hope you have a wonderful Father's Day.
Todd,
I think some missed the point here, even if you aren't a parent or even a single parent, you can be someone that kids can look up too. I know you have talked about being a Big Brother with the Big Brother / Big Sisters program before. It really is a great non-profit (non government) agency that can help kids of single family households become better adults.
I don't have any children, and never wanted any, but I sure would like to copy your post and send it to every parent I know................
Jim, you go right ahead. You don't have to be a parent to be a hero. There are so many ways to have kids look up to you without being a parent. I just don't think there are a lot of people in the public eye that should be looked up to as heroes anymore. Most are in the spot light because they did something wrong and I don't want my kids to consider that a good thing.
