What could the Portland Beavers
do for the Beaverton, Oregon, real estate market and the economy if
they become
the Beaverton Beavers? There are a lot of factors that we
as citizens
of the
City of Beaverton need to take in to consideration before we say yes or
no to
the Beavers moving to Beaverton, but in the end, in my humble opinion,
I think
this could be a great thing for the City of Beaverton and I’m not just
saying
that because I love baseball.
The first thing we need to consider is the impact on the area when it comes to traffic. Below you can see where they are planning to build the stadium. (The old Westgate Theater location) Now, as we know, the traffic in that area at rush hour can already be a headache, especially at Hall and Farmington and Canyon crossings. So that is one thing that would need to be fixed.
We do have MAX that goes right by the proposed location so the fans in Portland that already take MAX to the games or the fans from Hillsboro that took MAX won’t have to change how they get to the game. Plus, for those of us who drive, there now will be a heck of a lot more parking. All that baseball money coming in is directly impacting our local economy and real estate market here in Beaverton, Oregon
How will this parking help the City of Beaverton and its failed real estate deals? Remember “The Round” the failed condo project right in the middle of Beaverton that was built on the MAX tracks and was built to be a work / live condo community but has been owned, with the city, by a few people now and each time has had to file for bankruptcy? Well, this could be a huge boost to that project! They could use their now empty parking lot as an income stream on game nights. (Hopefully for concerts also.)
What will this do for the local economy? The local restaurants, many within walking distance of the stadium, would get a huge boost to their business and that would mean more jobs for the City of Beaverton residents. (That doesn’t include the construction jobs brought on by building the stadium or the people working for the stadium when it does open.)
Could this mean lower taxes for the residents of Beaverton? Possibly. The city could charge a luxury income tax like the City of Portland did and get a little bit of each players income when they play in Beaverton. The tax income that would be created from the stadium’s income could offset our local property taxes and income tax. (MAYBE) Also there will be more jobs and with more jobs, comes more income tax coming in from each of the jobs that the stadium created. With this there could possibly be more home ownership and with more ownership comes higher property values and more income for the city from property taxes.
I think this is a great thing for the City of Beaverton and I applaud Mayor Doyle and his staff for out of the box thinking over the past year that really is making the City of Beaverton a great place to live.

Exciting news for Beaverton. I don't always agree with the economic impact pronouncements. However, I love minor league baseball and appreciate the energy that professional sports bring to an area in terms of getting people to downtown areas and walking the streets. UnfortunatelyTodd, they would probably keep it the Portland Beavers but allow you to take the team... Just like the hockey team in Seattle it plays in Renton!
We have a minor league team in Grand rapids and I go a few times a year I think it was a wonderful addition to our local economy. Good Luck.
I have been away from the media for awhile. I didn't know anything about the Beaver's moving. What a shot in the arm for Beaverton, I would think. I love baseball and we catch at least a couple of the Salem Keizer Volcano's games. We drive 45 minutes to see them and we live behind us a trail of receipts for food, gas, and extras.
This should make a baseball fan like you very happy no? We have some local semi-pro teams near here - they are a lot of family fun!
I sure hope it does come to pass that we can get the Beavers here in Beaverton. I don't know about the name change either, but I do have my hopes, it sounds better. (LOL) The City of Portland has become so political correct that they are kicking out baseball for the American past time of soccer!
I hope they DO move to Cedar Hills -- off the Max line. I own a rental property up the street! SWEET!!
