Now, I love the Beaverton / Tigard area of Oregon as I graduated from Tigard High School and have lived her my entire life, but I have to say the newest idea of the Oregon Department of Transportation is just absolutely stupid! (And stupid may not be a strong enough word!)
You see, we have a highway here that connects Highway 26 with Interstate 5 that cuts right through the cities of Tigard and Beaverton, called Highway 217. It is really only about 10 miles long, but it is very much needed because without it, the drive from highway 26 to interstate 5 via surface streets would take well over 45 minutes. But, over the years as Tigard and Beaverton have grown, the traffic on 217 gets very heavy during rush hour, but it is still faster than the surface streets. The surface streets at rush hour would take well over an hour and half.
So what is the solution of the Oregon Department of Transportation to relieve the congestion? It is to close exits and on ramps during rush hour times so less people use the highway. WHAT? Are you joking? This will not only increase the traffic at the other on ramps, it will increase the traffic in the neighborhoods near the freeway because people will drive them to get to the on ramp that is open.
I have a family. I don't want more cars driving through my neighborhood, just because you couldn't come up with a better plan than closing on ramps and exit ramps to lesson the amount of traffic. Many people jump on the freeway, just to go to the next exit because it is faster and they don't want to drive through the neighborhoods. I think you idea is foolish and short sighted and maybe you need to think of actual development.
How many employees do you have in the highway development division? Now answer me this... How many new highways have actually been developed in the last 15 years? Either figure it out or retire, because I don't want to pay you if you aren't actually developing anything!

Hi Todd... this sounds like the transportation equivalent of agents who do not return phone calls when you are trying to submit an offer... neither one is doing their job!
Hi Todd...Sounds like you're on a tear with you local highways folks, it may not be their decision, but as always they do these things without an alternative plan.
Cheers
Todd I feel your pain and I can sum up your problem with just 2 words...
BUREAUCRATS & POLITICIANS
jOHN
Having driven Hwy 26 several times on my Oregon travels for work I get what you're saying very well. I can't believe you'd want to eliminate the only conduit through Beaverton and Tigard. Even if the traffic is all backed up, at least it's not backed up in the neighborhoods...
Todd --- I have to agree with you --- this sound absolutely ridiculous.

Todd
Sad, we have the same type of planning here once in awhile.
Todd, While I feel your angst I may be able to provide some insight to the "logic" behind your DOT's actions. In your case a particular highway is nearing "failure" to provide sufficient traffic flow. The DOT views spreading the traffic out over the surrounding "arterial" surface streets/expressways as a simple matter of resource management. They consider your neighborhood streets as resources pressed into service. These actions take place when there was a failure to anticipate the growth in traffic or there were not funds available to prevent the inevitable. With sufficient funding, access and community support the main highway can be rebuilt to accommodate the traffic. While this may do nothing to remedy your current angst hopefully it will provide some insight. BTW: I am not,nor do I have any plans to become an employee of the DOT. (But I am anticipating a major increase in Internet traffic,LOL) All The Best (in spite of the traffic)
Hi Todd, I hope they get this taken care of soon so that children aren't more in jeopardy due to traffic flow being detoured to where you live.
Hi Todd,
I have to believe that this idea will last about two days once implemented. Absolutely the most ridiculous thing I have heard recently.
LOL Todd sounds like with this plan the Peter Principle is alive and well :)
