Yesterday, my daughter’s Girl
Scout troop met at the PETCO
in downtown Beaverton and that is where they met Chris, the person at
the store
in charge of the PETCO field trip. I have to say right
from the beginning,
Chris had the kids and the parents interested. (I actually learned a
few things,
like Bearded Dragons are social lizards and the sell out quickly
because of it.)
The kids got to see
birds, mice, rats, snakes, lizards, a tortoise, and fish up
close and in some cases even hold them. I have to say,
prior to going on this
field trip, when I thought of PETCO, I thought it really as only a
place to buy
food and stuff for my pets. I thought of it as a box store for pet
supplies and
the animals they had were in cages all day and never handled. BOY WAS I
WRONG!
It was clear that these animals were handled and they enjoyed it, because unlike a lot of pet stores, these animals were used to people and craved the attention. I have had pet ferrets in my life and this is one animal that if you bought it at a pet store you could count on having to train it not to bite for the next 3 months. Not the ones from this PETCO store! They clearly knew Chris and couldn’t wait to be handled and petted by the kids.
If you are planning to get a
small pet, I wouldn’t hesitate
sending anyone to this store. These pets were loved and
well taken care of by a
staff that was not that of a normal pet store. The kids learned a lot
and
though they don’t carry pig food, (we have a pet pig) they are still a
store
that showed the kids how to hold and love an animal that will be a
source of
joy for years to come.
If you are in Beaverton,
stop off and say hi to Chris and meet the animals he
clearly cares so much about. This is clearly more than
just a job to him. I
truly felt he cared for every one of these animals just like they were
his own
and were more like fostering them until they found a home than just
selling
them.

Hi Todd,
What fun for all, loved seeing those kids.
Like you I thought it was more of pet food store. I'll have to share this with my daughter for her Cub Scouts and Brownies.
Hi Todd, I've been in Petco in our local area and been pretty impressed. I have a son who's mom won't let him have a snake, but we go in to visit them periodically. They are always great and someday we may break down mom's resistance.
Todd, that's encouraging to hear. Animals who live in cages need interaction with humans and/or other animals. They have a need to be loved and touched and talked to, just as we do. Good to know that Petco is treating their animals well.
Todd
All that interaction with the animals must have been superb. I never knew that about bearded dragons.
The individual employee/worker always makes the difference.....even in real estate.
Todd, great review. I will check out to see if the local PETCO is as good and start recommending them. Thanks.
Wow, you are so right! I have been to both PetSmart and Petco (in my area) and there is a completely different vibe in PetCo - the employees seem very knowledgable about the animals they have and DO spend quite a bit of time with them! It makes all the difference in the world!
My brother had a pet ferret that thing used to bite my toes and fingers when it got out of the cage. He really was a lot of fun though. I like the picture of your pig.
Great review of the local Petco. Thanks for sharing.
Scott, so did you let your daughter have a ferret? All kidding aside, Petco is a fun place. I like that they welcome dogs, even hyper active ones like Willie the Labradoodle.
Yes, we were very impressed with PETCO and I've had mice and ferrets as pets and I wouldn't hesitate at all at letting my kids get them as pets either. Ferrets are some of the best pets around because they act like kittens their entire lives.
