A School Bell Rang (Maybe?)

An old turn of the century school house
While the wife, kids and myself were out taking pictures of old barns we came across this wonderful find. What to us looked like an old school located off Jackson School Road of all places. I know, I should have known, but to be honest it was at the farthest end of Jackson School Road where I had never been until Thursday. There was no marker, nothing about this little school house. (But, the records for the building show it as a church meeting house as early as 1863) But, no where can I find the name of the school, just that there is a church located near here as well, but if any Hillsboro / North Plains historians know about this little school / church, I would love for you to pop in and tell us the history behind this building.

What a wonderful little church.  It looks somewhat like the church that John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Caroline had there wedding ceremony.  What a wonderful find!

I know that many of the older schools in our area were schools during the week and the church on Sunday.  This helped save money. I've heard stories from my grandmother that many times the older boys had to ring the bell if too large since the teachers were so small at that time and couldn't do it by themselves.

Pretty interesting to think that not too long ago these would have been the center and drive of the local communitiy.

What a charming picture. I love finding undiscovered places, or at least previously undiscovered by me.

I LOVE this little building!  It will be interesting to see if anyone that knows it's history provides the background.  It definitely looks like a little schoolhouse, doesn't it?  Keep us posted if you find out!

Todd.

I would have guessed this for a church but not the schoolhouse although many times school and church were held in the same building. :)

Todd, I'm glad you asked. I did some research and here is the history behind this unique landmark. You see back in the late 1800's Madaam Revere was courted by John Seeker. After their marriage, he built this school for her since she was a school teacher. It eventually grew and she later became the focal point for education for this small town. It has now been passed through several generations and the layout as you see is the creation from a reknown architect Vince Loohcs. Ok, I'm just pulling your leg. :D It is nice landmark and enjoy your Sunday!
