Earlier this week my brother took my kids for a couple nights before he went back to school again as a middle school teacher in Tigard. (I think he just wanted to spoil them and give them back) But, his wife and he took my kids out Geocaching. Though I had heard of it, I didn’t really know what it was or what it was all about.
When we went to pick up
the kids, they told us how much fun
they had doing it and that is when I started to ask my brother about it.
He and
his wife explained some of the rules, how it works, and how to meet
people
through Geocaching.
So, I downloaded the application for my iPhone and though I hadn’t intended to start that day, as I was dropping off my daughter for a girl scout overnight adventure, I turned on the application to see if I could figure out how it worked. That is when it said I was 8 feet away from my first Geocaching find!

I wasn’t sure if I was reading it right, so I called over my daughter and sure enough she said, “You are reading it right” and we took off up the hill to the sidewalk above and searched. This item was a little harder to find than some as it was only about 2 inches long and the only thing you could see was the tip of a paperclip. But, we found it, I logged it in and I was hooked!
I can’t wait to meet others that do this and hope to show others the joy of Beaverton by maybe placing some items in places that most people haven’t discovered. The smaller parks, the unknown business… the possibilities are endless! But I plan to discover some things about Beaverton that even I haven’t discovered.
Here are some pictures from our recent Geocaching ventures, and I promise, as we discover more of Beaverton through our Geocaching, I will share the photos of our experience and the undiscovered Beaverton! Feel free to follow my families ventures on Geocaching.com and our team name is LivingBeaverton.

Geocaching item made to look like a pinecone (Very sneaky)

Why these people love to hide things in trees, I just
don't know

And here I thought geocaching was a behavior restricted to squirrels. Who knew?
But then the decorated cone in the tree probably WAS put there by a squirrel.
Ya gottta wonder at least.
I had some people in my parking lot the other day and they were walking around and acting excited... I asked them if I could help them and they laughed and said no they were geocaching... I had no idea what they were talking about but they were having a great time!
These are some beautiful shots! thanks
This is a cool treasure hunt & i thought it would be looking for geodes before i checked the link...great to do with the kids...now i know what it is...thanks for sharing the pics too, Todd. Think i'd become addicted doing it- looks like way too much fun.
I've been taken to many place I would not have otherwise gone through geocaching. For the in city agent it is a great way to learn about your cities parks and other public places. OldBaldEagle
Todd - This is a very cool tool, my boys love treasuring hunting.
Whenever I hear Vince COndella on the news talk about this, it looks like so much fun, and a great family idea!!
That looks like great fun. I'll have to try that.
Wow, I had no idea what you were even talking about, but what great fun. I can't WAIT to share it with the grandkids. They go on all kinds of adventures and this would help make their time even more fun.
Thank you for sharing.
Todd -
I have been checking this out on line today. It sounds like a joyful family activity. I will get my son and grandson to check it out with me. We are floating rafts on the Willamette here in Eugene later today. It will be a great time to check out the idea.
I see there are hundreds of geocaches in every zip code in this city. I pulled up Taipei, Taiwan where we have family/friends. There are geocaches all over the map there, too. We have visitors from there in three weeks; we will try it with them. They can take it home.
This geocaching thing looks dangerous - could take over you life.
Like blogging.
Not for the faint-hearted.
And I haven't even done it once yet.
Such a fun thing for you and the kids to do together. I'll bet they're going to be having a blast as you continue your searching.
Well Todd I have learned something else from you! Never heard of Geocaching!! I will be downloading on my I-phone and seeing what I can find! Thanks!
You sound excited Todd! This would be a FUN way to spend time together and think of the exercise you'll get if you do it regularly!
How cool is that! I'll have to check it out. I've heard of it, but didn't pay attention. Thanks for presenting it to me again.
I do have to say it is very, very addicting! I now look up on maps where there could be a Geocaching opportunity close to anywhere I go before I even leave the house. I base which way I'm going to go based on where there can be a Geocache.

Todd - I had heard of similar types of adventures - sort of like little treasure hunts. But what great fun that must be. I am also impressed with the hanging pinecone. . .How clever can they get. I look forward to your future posts about this.
Geocache? Learning something new everyday! I'll be so glad when my new Droid gets here so I can hang with you cool kids and get the great apps, lol.
This sounds like so much fun! I have a 17 year old that isn't that "into me" right now. I think this would be great fun for all of us to do.
Thanks Todd! Looking forward to having some adventures of my own!
My son just started geocaching....now everywhere we drive he says, "Hey mom there is one over here under this bridge or right there under that sign!" He LOVES it! And yes Elizabeth your son would love it!
Todd thank you for posting this about Geocaching! Never mind the kids I can't wait to look into this closer. I too LOVE treasure hunts! I have never heard of this before ~ now I've just ordered a new droid X so hope that the app will work in it. Then I'm off to hunt!! Wonder how many are in Raleigh NC?!?!?!
Ok Todd, I'm back. I've signed up - ExloringRaleighNC. Can't wait to get outside and start hunting AND to get clients that have just moved here (especially the kids) out exploring their new home! Fun stuff!
Dear Todd,
Sent the GEOCACHING link tomy grandsons so we may try on their next visit to Atlanta.
Have a happy day -
Lynn
