Living Beaverton - Your guide to everything Beaverton

I don't feel like typing Saturday: You wanna fight about it?

Praying Mantis in Beaverton Oregon

Not many of us would stay and fight if we were put up to the challenge, we would rather walk away and live to fight another day.
But, then you run in to those who put their fists up at the drop of a hat no matter their size and are ready to show you who is boss! Clearly this fellow felt that way about me, though I wasn’t frightened, I did feel I needed to share him. This is only the second praying mantis I have ever seen in the wild in Oregon. Had no desire to leave, this was his spot and he clearly was ready to defend it!

Now that is a cool picture!  Crisp and clear!  What is he standing on?

Yes, Todd, what is he standing on?  It looks like a beat up old rubber ball with spots on it.

As usual, I didn't know what to expect when I clicked on your blog - what a great shot!!!

Yeah, geez Todd, what is the mantis preying on anyway?  Doesn't look good to eat.

Although it does appear to have special sauce all over it.

Yes...inquiring minds want to know...what is he defending so tenaciously.  They sure are cool creatures...I think he needs shades like yours... :)

Great shot Todd! Hew looks like he is contemplating the next move. They are quite unique and fun to watch, especially as babies. We just let go of 2 preying mantis pods in the garden to take care of some of the bugs before we plant our fall crop. They will hatch between 50-200 of them each.

He is standing on a cement pillar in a parking lot between my spot and the grassy area behind me.

That is an unusual place to find one, and then to find him so photogenic. :)

Hi Todd!
Praying Matis' are the coolest! We get them every once in a while around here.  They actually react to us to the point that I feel badly if I scare them and try to make sure that they are safe when I leave them.  I have to ask, however...what in the world is he standing on?

Hope you had a great weekend Todd!

A Praying Mantis is one of my favorites.  We've been lucky to have several throughout the years.  They are majestic little creatures and I am certainly glad they are not our size.

Posted by Doug Anderson, Bay Area Real Estate Views (Tucker Associates Real Estate Services) over 8 years ago

Well he would have had no problem with me. I would be happy to let him have his spot--no need for him to defend it! :OD GREAT shot!

I know this phot has been here for a while, but I just bumped in to it.  I love it.  I have seen few praying mantis in my life.  Beautiful creatures.
