Tomorrow is a sad day for Portland, but I will be there! As many of you know I am a big baseball fan and though I wish we had a major league team that I could watch every week, we had something special for close to 100 years in Portland Beavers Baseball.

Tomorrow, September 6, 2010, brings the end of an era for Portland. At 2pm at PGE Park they will be holding their last game in Portland. About 15 years ago we updated PGE Park for the Beavers as it had been many years prior to that since it had been updated and it did need the love. And since the 1970s, the park has shared the space with the Portland Timbers Soccer team.

I thought this was fine since they didn’t seem to really affect each other and it gave Portland two sports teams and it probably cut back on the Portland Beavers expenses. Then in 2007, the owner of the Portland Timbers bought the Portland Beavers. At first I thought this could be a good thing with cross promotion and everything.

But, today I’m convinced the only reason the guy bought the team was to run them out of town and out of their stadium! As soon as he bought them he started working on getting rid of them and now he has done it! The Portland Beavers are being forced out by Major League Soccer.

I’ve seen many Portland Timbers games over the years, but I can tell you now, I will never see another one! I will not put one dime toward a team that has forced out another sports franchise just for their own gain. (Especially when it comes to America’s pastime, baseball)
So, please join me tomorrow at 2pm and help me say “Thank You” to the Portland Beavers baseball team and the many years of enjoyment they have given Portland. As for you the owner, if there was a way I could say thank you to the Beavers without giving you a dime, I WOULD!

Didn't the baseball team put forward any options to have themselves moved to another venue or something? Seems kind of drastic to close them down over a stadium, from a PR perspective at least.
This is definitely WHACKED! What a sad, sad story! So long Beavers. :O(
Jeff, they tried to find a new park, but were unable to and even tried to move out to Beaverton and that didn't work out either, so as of now, they are done and there are some great minor league players I'm guessing without a contract.

Todd - We are going through a little of that owner-stadium thing here in Sacramento with our Sacramento Kings. I wouldn't be surprised if they became someone else's Kings one day.
Todd,
I'm not a fan, but I feel your loss.
Sports offer a way for people to bound. Fathers and sons, Husbands and wives(?), or just buddies. I'm sure your team will be missed. It's just not the same on TV.
Bill
I've got to get a "Black Ribbon" in jpeg to past in.
Todd, sorry to hear your team is being kicked out of the area. I hope that you can find some way to bring them back at some point in time.
Todd I think you need to get a list of investors including yourself and try to get another team to the area.
Asa fan of anything, it is always tough to see these things happen and change...sorry about that!
Todd - unfortunately nothing remains the same forever ..... Toronto went through a long dry spell for Baseball fans with out an MLB team then came the Sky Dome (now the Rogers Centre) and the Blue Jays ..... today they seem to have difficulty drawing large audiences to the games.
Todd, so sorry about your Beavers! I think sometimes the baseball that's played by teams like this is even more enjoyable than watching some of the majors. Hope many others follow your example.
Hi Todd - Boooo! That is sad news about the Beavers. I prefer baseball over soccer as well!
Todd - How sad for the Beavers and their fans. Unfortunately you're probably right about the buyout and their master plan was to get the field all to themselves.
A sad day for Portland and the Beavers fans as well. Root for your team one last time Todd, take lots of pictures, and enjoy the memories as the end of an era comes to a close.
Wow, that really stinks. I hope they win the game for you and all of the other fans in the area who are there to see them play for the last time.
