Yesterday,
Fort Vancouver
had a really cool event where they
walked you through history of the fort starting at World War II
and going back
to the earliest days of the fort when it was run by the Hudson Bay
Trading
company.

Now, this wasn’t just a normally history lesson. The people actually dressed in period clothes, talked and acted like they were there and were brought via a time machine to present day. Most would not break character and would even ask questions about my camera and how I was able to create a flash and what ship I had come in on.

It was a really cool event and now my daughter wants to go to the school and participate as a volunteer next year. We are all for this and hope she is able to be one of the few that are picked to be part of this group that does shows like this all year long. My son also wants to volunteer because he saw how the boys got to do wood work and he heard he gets to participate in a reenactment of an 1863 baseball game including uniforms and no gloves, like it was played then.

Here are the pictures and a video from the event, hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed taking them and enjoy the firing of the cannon.

Now what was really cool about this cannon was it was the first to bridge the gap between the original cannons and modern weapons. It was the first to have an exploding warhead and was the first to have a timer telling it when to explode.

Cooking area just as it was in 1870 and even the food was prepared today as it was then.

This was actually one of my favorite areas as well as my kids, we spent a long time here watching. The blacksmiths were making hooks today, but watching them get this metal red hot and then watch it bending with such ease was really neat.

The hats were made from beaver, but there was a reason it was known as the hat of the "Mad Hatter" as it was made with mercury and many other chemicals that people at the time, just didn't know was dangerous.

Todd, What a fun family outing, I hope your children are able to participate next year. I am sure you would really enjoy being able to watch your son participate in a reenactment of an 1863 baseball game. Thanks for sharing all of the pictures.
Todd,
It is great to have a historical experience like this with actors in their roles. Thanks for the great shots. :)
Steve
Todd, nice review and background of the tour. Beautiful pictures that say thousands of words too! Double nice!
Kind of like Williamsburg. I agree with Kent that your photos really are very clear and well sot.
I would have loved going to this event, and my hubby, a history teacher, even more! Great stuff!
Fabulous pictures... what a cool event. I haven't been to Fort Vancouver for several years. You're getting to be one with that cool new camera of yours... Your shots are well staged, revealing, and full of personality... You make it look so effortless...
Todd - I love when historic places present their history so well. We have Sutter's Fort, here in Sacramento, and they also do a really good job of presenting re-enactments, and having volunteers to help in keeping its history alive. Your photos are wonderful.
Todd that's a great history lesson, much better than reading it in a book
Todd, What great fun. It blows my mind how far we have progressed just in my lifetime! I remember the big moment from black and white TV to a color TV … progression from a typewriter to a computer … Gheez … these historical perspectives are amazing!
Todd - Nice! We used to go to Fort Vancouver for their fireworks show on the 4th of July, what a great place to relive history!
It really was awesome and hopefully next year my daughter will be able to be a volunteer at the event.
