Ever since meeting my wife, I’ve always talked about this great burger dive I used to go to in college. I say it is the reason I actually gained so much weight in high school and became a fan of the dive burger and have been on a search to find the best dives around.

Well, a few months ago, while on our way back from Seattle, I decided to just pull off in Tacoma, Washington, and take my wife to that dive that helped me gain so much weight. Though it was a lot more expensive than I remember it being, the lines were just as long and the food was just as good and greasy as I remembered it.
Now, this place is on my wife’s list of favorite dives. I do have to admit I wish I would have thought of that Diner, Drive-in and Dives show on the Food Network. That would have been the perfect job for me. I do have to say, looking for the best burgers in the world, while driving around the United States, all on someone else’s dime, would have been awesome.
So, what was the dive that I took my wife to that was so great? Tacoma’s famous Frisco Freeze and if you are near there and haven’t been to it, go, it will be well worth it!

Todd, watch Diners, Drive-ins and Dives whenever I have the chance. You lucked out with your wife agreeing with you. My favorite place growing up was our local Dairy Queen in Omak WA. They made homemade Jo-Jo's with Uncle Dan's Dressing. So good-I craved them from the time I moved away 25 years ago. When I went home, I had to have those. Alas, the last couple of times I went back.... no Jo-Jo's on the menu. I'm happy for you that your place still exists.
I have to laugh...part of our wedding ceremony was our reference to meeting over greasy cheeseburgers...is there any better food on earth...washed down with the malt of your choice ?
I went back to show my family the lake I spent my summers at. They've heard all the stories of thier grandparents who they've never met, of my brothers and sisters and the great fun we had. Sadly the park & lake have been turned into an exclusive private community. It looks nothing like the place I remembered. I don't visit the old haunts anymore, the memories are too precious to be tarnished.
How fun to take a walk down memory lane and share that experience with your wife...........I'm glad you weren't disapointed returning to your favorite dive, the Frisko Freeze.............many times you just can't go back, this time it worked out for you.
This looks like the kind of place for me. Must have some great food because it looks like the have been in business for many years.
Thanks for sharing your positive experience. Too many times when we revisit places from our young years, we find disappointments. In my case, neighborhoods have really changed.
Todd, Looks like a great place....I think looking for the best burger in an area is way more fun that visiting the local attractions. If there is a line at the door you have a good chance!
Todd - We used to LOVE the A&W drive-in. They also had the absolute best root beer floats. Unfortunately, I don't know of any that exist around here anymore. <sigh>
Todd - Number one, love the background on your blog. I love that show on the Food Channel and this joint appears to fit the bill for a future episode.
Todd, looks like a wonderful place to clog arteries, gain weight, etc. I love those places.
The Howard Johnsons Tendersweet fried clams always had me. Plattsburg NY. We always stopped there before crossing the Canadian order. And the Silver diner on old route 5 in Saratoga Springs for breakfast. or was it route 9.
Fun stuff Todd. So glad to see that your favorite dive was not replaced by one of those golden arches types of franchises.
Todd - There was a little hamburger stand in the town I grew up in and of course it was gone when I went back as an adult. They had the best burger's, healthy? not at all, but they tasted great.
Funny, as I was reading this I was thinking of that show too, Triple Ds....great show and yes, I would have loved his job too! Sounds like a nostalgic yummy find!
Got me thinking about the BRUCE, Glory Days pass you by. Every time I go back so much is changed that it breaks my heart but as they say people, places and things.
Sometimes you just have to have a big, cheesy, greasy burger and this looks like the perfect place to get one. Glad you went back down memory lane!
I've also ran in to many of those places that were not like I remembered them, the menu changed and it is sad, but I had rumors this place hadn't and that is why I went.
