The largest Hand Painted Mural in the United States is right here in Oregon!

This is part of my find over the last couple days of, “Really, I didn’t know that’ series and we found this one while visiting the Portland Memorial Mausoleum where my sister was laid to rest. While there, we found that over a two year period, on the back of the building, this hand painted mural was painted on the Westside of the building as is the largest hand painted mural in the United States.

Something else that was really cool to find out why were there was that the last horse drawn funeral precession was in 1913, since that date they have been using cars. (Really, I didn’t know that, I would have thought it would have been in the 1920s before that service completely stopped.)

Todd ~ I had to adjust my eyes, I thought I was looking at a reflection in the water.  That is a really cool hand painted building.  Do you know when it was painted?  Awesome shot!

A horse drawn hearse?  Suddenly out-paced by cars?

There has always been an uneasy status element involved in funerals.  It is easy to believe funeral directors might have been among the first to put cars into use.

Followed closely by wedding planners (though at the time period you mention only the very, very wealthy would have used one).

That is quite a large mural. Did you find out how long it took the painter to make?

It took about 2 years and it was done in 2008-2009. Sadly one of they people is longer with us and it has been dedicated to him.

Awesome... You have to look for a moment to actually get that some of it is the mural and not the foliage in front. I have to stop by and see this next time I'm down your way. Fab photo!

Wow!  That is so huge!  I hope it retains its clarity over the future years.  Thank you for sharing!

Hi Todd... what a wonderful mural.  It makes the building blend in nicely with the surrounding nature!

Wow, that's a mural, there.  I've been photoing/blogging murals around the Charleston area, but nothing that large.  I imagine that took some funding to create.  Murals do enhance the beauty of a city.
