Living Beaverton - Your guide to everything Beaverton

Stop complaining about your kids not getting out of the house and do something about it

I hear many reports and parents both complaining that all their kids do is sit around and watch TV or play video games. Then they wonder why the kids are gaining weight. I often over hear parents saying, that they try to kick their kids out, but they are back within minutes and in front of the TV.

Taking your kids out for a walk, rather than kicking them out

Well, here is my suggestion, go outside with them, go on a family hike somewhere. Take them away from the home, so they can’t go back inside. This is a great opportunity for you to lose some weight as well as help your children get the exercise they need.

Making walks with the kids educational

Why not make it an educational fieldtrip? See what animals you can find, identify flowers together, do whatever it takes to get the kids away from the TV and off their hind quarters. Don’t just talk about what you can do, do it. Plus the bonding time together is something that can never be replaced!

The rule in our house was... if the sun is up, no tv, no video, no gamboy, no walkman (they didn't have iPods back then!) :OD

Todd, there are so many incredible things to do outside, it's a shame not to take advantage of them. Parents owe it to their kids to set a good example about outdoor activities!

Todd, everyday I see the same couple of kids playing two square, in their driveway. Ah yes, there was life before TV and video games...

Todd, you said a mouthfull. How many parents are sitting on the couch or playing on FaceBook, yelling to their kids to get active. They (WE!) need to be an active part of their lives. Get up, go out and do something with them. Anything!

Come to Fishhawk Lake and walk the hiking trails! Do some fishing!

Actually, Todd, this is one of those reasons why families gravitate towards gain back their children, create memories that don't involve texting, get back to nature, "stop the Madness" and have some quiet times together and BREATHE THE FRESH AIR!

Todd, just wait until they are older and gone.  All you'll want to do is get them back in the house!

If they have to have something electronic in their hands, make it a digital camera! Nature walks, city walks, (insert you favorite here) walks. The key is to get out side and experience the world.

Todd - Lead by example!  My husband and son go mountain biking all the time, which I'm not sure either one would go alone.  Monkey see monkey do.......

Todd, I love your message! Way too many folks just pass the buck and you challenge parents to do something to take responsibility for the well being of their kids. Good job!

BTW did you happen to notice the Phillies game where they made a fantastic comeback in the ninth inning. You will have to sit on the edge of your seat at that game in a couple of days.

Luckily, I started that routine early on.  None of my kids have been big TV watchers.  I have never been either.  There is just so much to do rather than watch TV!
