Climb that mountain and don't look back

Think about yourself for a minute, have you ever climbed a mountain? Be it a real mountain or a challenge in your life that you considered a mountain that was unmovable.

Think about a mountain for a minute, it is a large object in our life that we have the choice of climbing, going around, or just having it stop us in our tracks.

I look at a mountain as a challenge that confronts us from time to ime in our lives. Some of us decide to go around the mountain and let the challenge sit there until we can't go around any more. Others take on the mountain face first, climb the mountain and take every challenge that is thrown their way. Finally, there those of us who just stop and shut down when we are hit with the big challenges in our lives.

Why is this? Why do each of us treat this mountain so different? We are all given the ability to challenge the mountain the same way, but we all react so different. Why am I bringing all this up? Well, as I was flipping through the channels looking for some good television on Sunday night, which for the record is almost impossible to find, and someone said a phrase that just hit me and I realized I was also this person.

What this person said or at least close to it was that when we are younger if someone says climb that mountain we don't ask why, we just climb it, get to the top, and celebrate. But as we age something happens, we change, and if someone asks us to climb a mountain we ask, well what's on the other side? What happened to our spirit? Why do we care what is on the other side? We are given an opportunity.

I'm starting to think I should have joined real estate when I was 18, when I had that fire, that if someone told me climb that mountain I would have done it without asking why. Now, I hire coaches and mentors to tell me how they did it and when they tell me to climb that mountain I hesitate and ask why, what is on the other side?

Life should be about the challenge, not the reward and caring what is on the other side. This is the attitude that stops us in our tracks when a challenge comes along. You see that if we don't have someone to answer the question of who, or what is on the other side, we hesitate and let the mountain dominate us.

So from this moment on, I challenge each of you to look at the mountain and start to climb without question to whom, what, or why and enjoy life. Take the challenges that life gives us and remember those challenges are given to us to help us grow and become better people, be it in business or our personal lives.

Todd- It sounds like you were doing a lot of reflecting.....and my friend you will do a lot more as you get older.  I know that mountain.....I have climbed it, and I have gone around it.  Once I just sat on it and watched others trying to figure out the path.  But no matter what I have done, I have admired it..........

Kathy - It is true, I'm getting closer to 40 and it does seem that I am looking forward a little more as my kids grow and trying to be more positive for them.

Todd- I am smiling....what you said is called "growing up".....and as our kids get bigger we all have to give up some of our own youth, in order to be there for them.......but you know what......it's so worth it.

Todd

I came here because of a comment you made on my post! Since I am much older than you:), I have been to the mountain several times and back during my lifetime, yet I still feel the same way. We are all given challenges, everyone is equal in that respect. We do not know when or how they (the challenges) will come. I have found that having a simple plan for my life works best. Be sincere, live in the moment, pay it forward every day in any way that you can and be happy. Consider each mountain as a challenge and climb it. I like the way you think!

Todd--Thank you for giving me a great laugh this morning regarding the Cowboy meltdown.  I guess my mountain has been a bit foreboding lately.  I appreciate the challenge you gave me with the email and this blog and will be getting back in the game soon!

Karen - Thanks, I'm just a dad, trying to get to the next point in my life and hope my kids get the same guidance I did from my dad.

Mary - Anytime, I seem to be here to drive others and hopefully in turn they will drive me on the days I need it.

Todd, there is another stage, when people ask themselves, "OK, so if I climb this mountain, will I be able to get down?"  Loved the post.

Climbed  Mt Rainer when I was 40. Had a great time getting to the top...then looked down. Now that was a long decent(to me anyway). Here I am at 60 and loving life and all it brings to me.Don't need to actually climb anything to feel one with the space around us. Reflection is a good thing as we grow and understand ourselves.  Nice post today.

Todd, This is the reason I love reading your posts. You are an inspiration. Now I am getting my hiking boots, rope, backpack and going to conquer that mountain I've been circling the past several years. Thanks.

Patricia - I'm not ready for that one yet. There are days I already wonder about getting out of bed.

Kim - I'm creeping up on 40 and my oldest daughter will be turning 10 this year and I'm realizing that she has more energy than me and shows no fear! Something I used to see in myself and wish I had it again.

Judy - Glad you enjoyed, I really stepped out of my comfort zone writing this one. Not used to being all serious.
