If these walls could talk

Well today, I may have finally been in a house that can. The history of this home is just amazing and I can't talk about it completely because I'm going to be taking the listing on it, hopefully, next week.

Here are just some of the things, that while being remodeled, that were found. Some letters were found in the wall addressed to the young woman of the house, from her boyfriend, who was off fighting in World War II. Some old magazines were found, and until it was remodeled, there was a coal furnace with a coal chute that landed next to the furnace from outside.

The electric that was in the house was still tubes, but was still standing strong, and I truly believe in 100 years it still will be, unlike the homes that are built today. The pride that was taken to remodel this home was amazing and even the person who took on this remodel said it wasn't about the money. It was about the pride and history of the home, and because of that, he will probably lose money, but he just didn't care.

He knows the family that buys this home that has to be someone special and can appreciate the history that comes with this home. The Christmas post cards, letters and even the old magazines are all going to be given to the new owners, so they can tell the history of this home when they have friends and family over.

The seller was able to find who he thinks was the young girl in the letters, but unfortunately she is in an old folk's home now, and is senile and doesn't remember anything, including the home or the letters. But, the care that was taken into bringing this home back to glory was amazing and, when I get the listing, I can't wait to write about it and promise to let those walls talk! They know that with their stories and the history behind this home, that there will be a lot more than one post. It will be fascinating looking into the history of the families that lived there and how it came to be.

Have you ever listed a home that you wish you could get the walls to talk?

What a great story.  That's one of the things we love about old houses... discovering what's underneath the layers time has buried.  Good luck on the listing... we'll be looking for that post next week!

Todd - This sounds like an interesting listing indeed.  I would love to see the old letters!  I like the fact that they will be passing over the home's history to the new owners.

Hey Todd,

That is pretty cool. I love old homes and the history which comes with them. Only if those walls could talk. After you get the listing, giveus some more "history" on the home.

Pretty cool post, Todd.  You've touched on another unique aspect of real estate - that memories are tied to it.

Todd, I love stories like that.  When one of my grandmothers passed I bought her house.  It was so pristine you would never have known it was 100 years old.  She and my grandfather lovingly cared for that house and it showed.  There was little for me to do other than a new roof and partial foundation. I found many "hidden" treasures, from toys my father played with and stuck in a heat vent that I found when having them cleaned, to the family's WWII ration coupon books put on an out of the way shelf.  It was like stepping back into history.  When I decided to sell and move out of state, I hand picked my buyer.  It wasn't about the money, it was about the "home".

Hi Todd,

I once sold an older home - not as old as the home you described, but it was 20-30 years old.  It had a shed in the backyard which the buyer liked because he like to work in the yard and had a lot of equipment.  Soon after he moved in, he started cleaning out the shed because the sellers had left a lot of "junk" there.  He noticed something odd on  the floor so he started digging around.  Guess what.  He found a glass jar with $3,000 in cash!  Not bad for just "digging around" in the shed.

Vickie - I'm glad to hear your web guy saw things my way. (LOL)

Jesse - I'm happy to say we not only found the little girl but the mom was still alive and we were able to return the letters!

Marlene - I'm not sure you want to hear those stories. (LOL)

Jason - It really is cool, but because we found the person the letters belonged to they are no longer are going with the home, they went back to her.

Sean - I've been writing posts about this home for over a year now and I wish I could find out even more, but seems some things were lost with time.

Nancy - Lucky for us we found the owner of those letters and they were able to go home.

Fran - Apparently you don't, we are having a problem finding a happy buyer for it. Everyone loves it, but no one will bite! I'm actually thinking of buying it myself, but I need to get about another $100,000 for the down payment before I'm comfortable.

Renae - The lost railline that now is a walking path was just lost with time and now they recreate it with MAX Lightrail. Kind of funny they brought something back that didn't work the first time and try it again 75 years later. Still a losing thing, but government now just taxes more to pay for it rather than scraping it.

Jeff - I love history especially when I feel I can reach out and touch it.

Terry - THAT IS TOO COOL! You should post the pictures of the ration book. My aunt and uncle bought my great grandfathers property 30 years ago and still live there today.

George - $3,000 is cool but in Vegas, I wouldn't go digging too much, you could have found a body!
