Living Beaverton - Your guide to everything Beaverton

Oranges in the Kitchen, Bananas go to the bedroom and um… and Coconuts to the living room

Have you ever had to relocate or even move across town, and had to go buy boxes at the local u-haul for $3.00 a box? This can get real expensive real quick and I admit I move myself about every two years now and one of the secrets I've learned to save money is to make real good friends with my local produce manager!

You see, every couple days the produce department gets new boxes of fruit and then they recycle the boxes so they can make room for more boxes of fruit to come in. But, if you talk to the produce manager and tell them that you would like to take those boxes, they won't smash them down for recycling and will save them for you.

The last move we made, we figured out that we saved over $150.00 by making friends with three produce managers at local stores. To me, that was well worth it. So before your next move, head to your local produce department and save yourself some big money!

Boxes from the liquor store work well, too, especially the ones with the dividers.  I use those to pack stemware.

Todd, Every two years? The packrat in me is shuddering!LOL! When we moved to our new home five years ago I didn't realize how much crap plan too well and ran of boxes. My MOM went behind groceries stores and gas stations dumpster diving for boxes! How can you repay someone for that!LOL!

Yes, I've used the liquor store boxes myself... Also, I've gotten boxes from our local Recycle Center - most of the time, all you have to do is tape them back into boxes from being flattened, and they are as good as new!

Cute headline! Interesting that you are also a serial mover. Most local agents seem to buy and hold. I'm an anomaly.  It's good to discover others that share similar traits.

Since my husband 'retired' 20 years ago he has worked part time in department store...we get all the boxes we could ever use this way.  I've never paid a dime for a box...

Todd, Those are great boxes for moving - if any one lives near a military base sometime you can pick up real moving boxes free from Craigslist after they have completed a military move. Just a thought too.

Todd, that is some great advice. I wish I had thought of that before I moved back to Atlanta. I spent over a $1000 in box supplies.

I like to use file storage boxes.  They are very inexpensive, extremely strong and a good size so my wife doesn't pack so much that I kill myself trying to carry them.  I buy them in bulk from Office Max or Office Depot when the have them on sale.

Hi Todd, I was going to say exactly what Lorrie started off with. I always get the divided boxes for my stemware...oh yeah, somebody already told you that. Hum. I will remember the produce boxes though. I am due to move again in the next nine years. Tee-hee. Later in the rain~Deb

Lorrie - Oh, never thought about that, good thinking!

Debbie - We did that a lot as kids to help mom pack up her classroom at the end of each school year. (LOL)

Jonelle - But most home buyers and sellers don't know these tricks to save hundreds of dollars and that is why this post is here... Hey, do we get a cut of what they save?

Vickie - I didn't want to, but there were things that made us want to move from those neighborhoods. (Crime, sports, mother-in-law)

Mary - See that is what I am talking about! Do you ever share them with your clients?

Jo - Interesting, I'm glad to see they are willing to do that rather than just throwing them away.

Danny - $1,000? DANG, I wish you had read this post too!

William - A few people have said that, see since I don't drink, I would have never thought about that.

Randy - You carry them? Find some local kids to do that. (LOL)

Deb - See, us guys don't think of the stemware, we are just happy to no have to carry stuff.
