You couldn’t have made me prouder

It was a wild weekend and one that I will never forget as my heart skipped a beat a few times, but you never let me down. Last year, I started coaching softball in the middle of the year after the other coach just up and quit in the middle of the season because of some words that were said about her coaching style.

It was tough, those poor girls only won one game all season long. Only three of those 12 girls came back this year. I was asked by last year's assistant coach to give it one more shot and I'm really glad I did. Once again you couldn't have made me prouder.

From beginning to end you made my season fun! You always laughed and joked, but when it came to game time, you played your hearts out! We were the talk of the league, and from what I understand, because of you, there are a few rule changes coming! (All for the good, I promise.)

Thursday night going in to the tournament I thought it was going to be fun and a great experience for you. When you won that game easily, I have to admit I started to get excited. Then Friday night, when we went in to double sudden death and ended up having one of the most watched game of the season, if not the most watch game in Hillsboro Girls Softball Associations history, my heart was skipping beats.

Then it was time for the start of our double header and knowing most of you had been up since 7am for school, I have to admit I was worried that you were going to pass out on me. You had just played your longest game you had ever played, at almost 3 hours long. But, you did and won yet again. It was a shame they had to cut it short, because you were really showing your team pride!

I have to admit after Friday night, going in tied for 1st place with one game to go, I didn't sleep very well. I finally fell asleep at 1am and woke up again at 5:30 and was already just waiting for the game. When you got to the field I knew you were tired, but I didn't care, you were my girls and you had already made me the proudest coach in the league.

When the game finally ended it was so sad to see the tears in your eyes, not because you had lost, but because you knew your season was over. I was happy to hear that the other team that we were tied for 1st place with had also lost their game and we had a shot at the 1st place trophy. (This is where one of the rule changes comes in to place - future tourneys may not be decided by points, but by wins during the season, in the event of a tie.)

Because our Friday night game got cut short since the field lights shut off at 10pm, we didn't get the opportunity to get as many points as the other team did, who played 2 extra innings.

So, girls, I want you to know that as a coach I couldn't have been prouder and I had more fun than I ever thought was possible! I like the fact that by the end of the season we all had nicknames for all you girls and it just showed everyone how we bonded as a team. I'm excited to tell you that we have two other girls from other teams already asking to be on our team next year because they saw how much fun you had versus their teams.

So thank you for being you and I look forward to seeing you next year!

TODD - Sounds like you put together a great season with these girls, and they should hold their heads up high.  It stinks when poor rule planning overshadows the performance of those that left it all on the field when they played.  Congratulations on your season.

Very sweet Todd! Our season is coming to an end as well! It is funny, when the season starts, you feel like you cannot wait to get it over and June seems so far away when it is January that you are signing up! But when then, just like that, you are saying goodbye. Thanks for sharing! (No worries about commenting...I read your other post about being busy )......
