Normally it takes our family about an hour, to an hour and a half, to get to the beach, depending on which beach we are heading to. But today it only took about 15 minutes as it seems the beach got a lot closer to us than normal.
You see the City of Portland has a public square right in the middle of downtown called Pioneer Court House Square, and this year they bussed in a few tons of sand for a sand art contest. All you could use was the sand and water to build some master creations.
Well, I have to say they build a heck of a lot better looking creations than I do, or ever could do, when I am at the beach. Check out the photo gallery of pictures my dad took while at the event.

Those are amazing. I have a tough time with one upside-down bucket of sand coming out perfectly.
Great effect, great pictures, very nice story. Keep up the great local work Todd.
Todd- thanks for sharing those amazing sand sculptures. I think they look really neat.
Not bad for not being at the beach. With all the beaches we have here, we do not get many sand sculpture artists.
Todd- This is amazing. I can not believe they could only use sand and water. Did you get to watch them build these? Were they professional people who made them? This is so cool- I love it. Thanks for sharing.
Todd, those are great sand sculptures. Reminds me of of the artwork (and it is an art) you'd see in Puerto Vallarta and South Beach. Talented folks.
Todd, this was incredible!! Thanks for sharing!
Mark - I do also, I was amazed at what these people could do with the same sand and the same water that I'm given at the beach.
Fred - Thanks Fred, these pics were by my dad, so I will pass that on.
Nestor or Katerina - Our sand isn't as warm as yours, so I think these guys learned how to build fast (LOL)
Randy - Can't they build them at the beach? That is where most of these guys got their start.
Lynn - It is amazing what someone can do with a little sand and water.
Barbara - I think they are now professional, I think they win money if they win the competition. I'm not sure how they do it, but they claim there is no glue in that water, but I'm telling you, it doesn't look possible. (Kind of like some of the hair in the 80's - lol)
Debbie - Oh, it is certainly art, there is no doubt of that. I can't even draw some of the things these people made out of sand.
Susan - It was a fun day that is for sure and love sharing.
