Living Beaverton - Your guide to everything Beaverton

Make some extra money before you move

photo courtesy of orangekityYou are now about to move and you look around and say to yourself "Where did all this stuff come from?" We all collect things over time, that when it comes time to move that we just don't want to either take with us or just don't want any more.

Most everyone hates moving and that is why so many moving companies exist. We just throw up our hands and say you take care of it. This can cost thousands of dollars and when we get to our new home we are just amazed why we kept this and that as we unpack the boxes.

Now, you can make money a couple ways from all your items that you no longer want. If you have a lot of items that you no longer want, you may want to consider having a garage sale. This can bring in some money rather quickly to help pay for the boxes and storage units that maybe needed for the pending move. The second and the potential more profitable one is either using an online auction service such as E-bay or a local service like Craigslist. If you do use Craigslist, I suggest you look on E-bay for similar items to see what prices they are selling for prior to putting them up for sale.

Think about all the items that don't need to be moved with you that could make you $200-$300 dollars. The treadmill, washer & dryer are three things that could bring you $900 or more depending on the age of the items. Would $900 help you out in your move? After your garage sale or Internet selling venture, do you still have things leftover that you don't want? Great! Take them down to a donation center and donate them and get a tax write off for your next year's taxes.

We all have items that we bought special for the home we are moving out of, that don't need to take to the new home. Think about donating them to the new owner of your home, by putting them in a gift basket and say "We bought these with this house in mind and thought we would give them to you as a move in gift" This will be looked on by the buyer as a very generous gift and even if they don't want the items, they will just thank you and throw them away themselves.

Good luck in your pending move and for further moving ideas and tips feel free to e-mail or call me anytime.
