Beaverton Oregon: Putting people before government

Have you ever wondered why a city would make a code that totally defeated the purpose of government? One of these government regulations in Beaverton, Oregon, was that many churches, schools, and other large facilities couldn’t be used as emergency shelters because they didn’t meet the city’s codes for that.

I’m not sure why the codes didn’t allow for this or what code could have possibly been violated by trying to keep people safe during large storms or other events. However, the Mayor of Beaverton has really stepped up to the plate and has proposed a change that I think is a good one.

Mayor Denny Doyle has proposed that there be a temporary lifting of the rules on development codes during major events making it so these facilities could be used to protect the public from the elements.

The idea is that there is a lot of homeless people and people who lose their power during major storms, like the one we had in December. Can you imagine it being 25 degrees outside and to be without power for 8 or 9 days? Well it happened here and we had no place for these people to go to keep warm or even get a warm meal.

This is one of the reasons I love Beaverton, Oregon. The government here doesn’t always think like the government we have come to expect over the past 30 years, where logic doesn’t prevail, it hinders.

I like that, Todd.  As someone who this week announced my candidacy for mayor in my town, I hope logic will prevail in my government (should it come to pass this year).

Hey Todd,

Denny Doyle deserves recognition for using common sense.  I hope his idea is approved quickly.

Todd- That is a great idea. I just heard Governor Jindel tell the story of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. He called down to a sheriff wondering why the boats were not out picking up the people in the floods and it was because the Bureaucrats in DC would not allow them to rescue anyone until they sent over their proof of insurance! WHAT!!?? So the Gov and the Sheriff told DC to shove it where the sun don't shine and went to rescue people anyways.

Jeff - Feel free to use that in your campaign! Please remember not to just spend money because you can.

Bruce - I think it already has been and I sure hope that it goes on the books permanently because that is what the community is supposed to do for its citizens.

Katerina - Come on that makes perfect sense. Let people die before you make sure you can pay for them if they should be saved and get a rope burn getting in to the boat because you have insurance.

Todd,

I am glad to see the mayor can step up and do something that needs to be done.

TC,

In my opinion, this is too intrusive government...!!! Whatever happened to the notion of government as 'public servants'...? Thanks,   Fran

Zane - I can, but I don't think it will ever happen. Usually the best liar wins!

Don - So was I!

Fran - I would love to see the government be servants and I don't know what happened to it. But, the fact that the mayor actually had to step in to make something that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place an exception was rather sad. But at least he did the right thing for the people on this one.

I've told people that as mayor I won't accept any stimulus blood money.  Go Bobby!
