Beaverton Oregon: WES (Westside Express Service) now running

Beaverton Oregon: WES (Westside Express Service) now running by Todd Clark

Late last month I noticed there was a change to the morning traffic by my house. You see, I can see a major road from my home in  Beaverton Oregon and that road is affected by WES. Every ten minutes or so, the train bells go off and the gates close for less than a minute to let WES pass over Scholls Ferry road and continue on its way to the Beaverton Transit Center if going north, or to Wilsonville if heading south.

WES is both a blessing and a curse for me as I used to live within 2 blocks of MAX (Metropolitan Area eXpress). And though I never heard it, it did bring with it a group of people, that I have to admit, I didn’t like living near me. But, I did use it on a regular basis when going to the Portland Beaver’s games or the Portland Trail Blazer games. I will be doing the same with WES as it connects with MAX and saves me the headache of finding a parking place downtown or having to drive late at night after a game. (Traffic is horrible after games!)

WES, so far, doesn’t show signs of what MAX brought to my old neighborhood. I still plan to watch it very carefully as this is now my neighborhood. However, WES is still bringing complaints from the neighbors right next to the tracks because every time it goes through a crossing state law says they have to sound their horn and unlike the quiet horn that MAX seemed to have, WES has one that sounds like more like a freight train. Can you imagine hearing that blast 4 times every 15 minutes between the hours of 6am-9am?

There is a large segment of this area's population that make the short commute to Portland from Beaverton everyday. I hope in the next couple of years WES can help the ever growing traffic problem, since the current public transportation system just wasn't enough.

I have been thinking about how many trains were put out of service over the past 40 years or so and think with the lean toward conserving energy that reinstating train service could go a long way to saving energy. I do feel bad for those who have to hear that whistle at night.

Welcome to my nighmare! I live in an area that most folks would consider "out in the country" but we are just 3 miles from a railroad crossing. The whistle sounds like clockwork at 3:30 am, 5:30 am,... I think it is louder in rural areas where it travels through unpopulated spaces. No other homes to filter the sound.
