Tomorrow is a sad day for Portland, but I will be there! As many of you know I am a big baseball fan and though I wish we had a major league team that I could watch every week, we had something special for close to 100 years in Portland Beavers Baseball.

Tomorrow, September 6, 2010, brings the end of an era for Portland. At 2pm at PGE Park they will be holding their last game in Portland. About 15 years ago we updated PGE Park for the Beavers as it had been many years prior to that since it had been updated and it did need the love. And since the 1970s, the park has shared the space with the Portland Timbers Soccer team.

I thought this was fine since they didn’t seem to really affect each other and it gave Portland two sports teams and it probably cut back on the Portland Beavers expenses. Then in 2007, the owner of the Portland Timbers bought the Portland Beavers. At first I thought this could be a good thing with cross promotion and everything.

But, today I’m convinced the only reason the guy bought the team was to run them out of town and out of their stadium! As soon as he bought them he started working on getting rid of them and now he has done it! The Portland Beavers are being forced out by Major League Soccer.

I’ve seen many Portland Timbers games over the years, but I can tell you now, I will never see another one! I will not put one dime toward a team that has forced out another sports franchise just for their own gain. (Especially when it comes to America’s pastime, baseball)

So, please join me tomorrow at 2pm and help me say “Thank You” to the Portland Beavers baseball team and the many years of enjoyment they have given Portland. As for you the owner, if there was a way I could say thank you to the Beavers without giving you a dime, I WOULD!

Autumn Ridge Park in the Tanasbourne East Neighborhood of Beaverton, Oregon

OK, I love this park. The Autumn Ridge Park in the Tanasbourne East Neighborhood of Beaverton, Oregon has almost everything a family could want in a park! It has walking trails, slides, swings, basketball courts, picnic tables, drinking fountains, a horseshoe pit and now for the big one that I think I’ve only seen in one other Beaverton Park, a bathroom!!!

Now, a bathroom may not seem like a big thing to you, but if you are a parent to a young child or grandchild, then you know exactly why bathrooms are so important. I have cut many a fun park visit short in the past which really is a shame when you have such a good park system as the Beaverton and the Tualatin Hills Parks and Recreation department does.

If you are in the neighborhood and looking for a great little park for your kids to get some wiggles out, then I suggest you check out Autumn Ridge Park in the Tanasbourne East Neighborhood because I do have to say it is one of the best ones Beaverton has to offer!

Not many of us would stay and fight if we were put up to the challenge, we would rather walk away and live to fight another day. But, then you run in to those who put their fists up at the drop of a hat no matter their size and are ready to show you who is boss! Clearly this fellow felt that way about me, though I wasn’t frightened, I did feel I needed to share him. This is only the second praying mantis I have ever seen in the wild in Oregon. Had no desire to leave, this was his spot and he clearly was ready to defend it!

Discovering Beaverton and your neighbors one Geocaching adventure at a time!

Earlier this week my brother took my kids for a couple nights before he went back to school again as a middle school teacher in Tigard. (I think he just wanted to spoil them and give them back) But, his wife and he took my kids out Geocaching. Though I had heard of it, I didn’t really know what it was or what it was all about.

When we went to pick up the kids, they told us how much fun they had doing it and that is when I started to ask my brother about it. He and his wife explained some of the rules, how it works, and how to meet people through Geocaching.

So, I downloaded the application for my iPhone and though I hadn’t intended to start that day, as I was dropping off my daughter for a girl scout overnight adventure, I turned on the application to see if I could figure out how it worked. That is when it said I was 8 feet away from my first Geocaching find!

I wasn’t sure if I was reading it right, so I called over my daughter and sure enough she said, “You are reading it right” and we took off up the hill to the sidewalk above and searched. This item was a little harder to find than some as it was only about 2 inches long and the only thing you could see was the tip of a paperclip. But, we found it, I logged it in and I was hooked!

I can’t wait to meet others that do this and hope to show others the joy of Beaverton by maybe placing some items in places that most people haven’t discovered. The smaller parks, the unknown business… the possibilities are endless! But I plan to discover some things about Beaverton that even I haven’t discovered.

Beaverton, Oregon and Beyond from Todd’s Eyes – Going back in time

I had another idea of what to post on today when it came to “From Todd’s Eyes” today, but yesterday afternoon that all changed when it was 92 degrees here in the Portland area and I was at my brother’s place. I got the chance to go out in his 1916 Model T and enjoy the wind in my hair and see a lot of friendly people.

Now, one thing I’ve always noticed is people always will honk and flip people off if they are not going the speed limit in front of them, they always seem to be in a hurry. But, to most people, those rules don’t apply when they are behind an old car. Everyone seems to understand that the classics just couldn’t get up to today’s’ speed limits. It wasn’t as hurried of a life and people don’t seem to mind looking at the classics and don’t care that it can’t go 30 mph.

So, here are some pictures of each of my family members getting their ride in my brothers Model T as well as a picture while we were driving. I do have to admit I wanted to take more pictures while driving, but I was really enjoying the ride and I completely forgot I even had the camera and only took the one as we were leaving the driveway.

This last week, I took this picture in Tigard, and gee, I can’t figure why business may be down. Do I really want to know the way to the Pagan ritual retreat stop? Is that really the journey I want to go on when I learn to drive? I guess, though, you are getting a two for one deal, you learn to drive and get the Pagan journey for one low price. Wait, can you carpool? Maybe we can get others to pitch in for the road trip? No, wait a second, I’m not going on any journey with someone who is just learning to drive. That sounds way too dangerous!

OK, if you have funny signs, feel free to add yours to the post in the comments and I promise to have more in the upcoming weeks. Since I started thinking about doing this I have come across a few that are perfect for this series.

Ride ‘em cowboy… My wife’s and kids first rodeo (That Clackamas County Fair)

Back in the 1920s and 1930s my Grandfather and Great Grandfather were considered rodeo stars. They made lots of money on the rodeo circuit. I remember going to many rodeos as a kid with my family and I enjoyed them a lot. There was always action going on and it was just like a rock concert.

But, somehow, in my 17 years of marriage, I had never taken my wife to a rodeo, well that was until this past weekend. I called my mom and dad, we all met up outside the gates, and we all went as a family. I figured with my dad’s farming background as a kid and the rodeo emersion course he had as a kid, he would be able to answer the questions I couldn’t for my kids.

The kids had a blast, as did my wife, and now she wants to go to more. They all loved the rodeo clown and the show! Here are the pictures from the fair and the rodeo. Oh, and for the record, large sows, just like our pot belly pig, will fall over if you rub their belly.

My daughter discovered just like our pig, rub their belly they fall over!

Who needs to police, we have her on duty!

Give the gift of life! Donate blood (Location places for Beaverton and Tigard, Oregon)

Summer is ending, but that doesn't mean the demand for blood donations is going down the fact is it is actually going up. The finally couple weeks of summer can actually be one of the biggest times for the need for blood. Families are all out trying to get one last weekend in before school starts and unfortunately with the holiday weekend accidents happen and the need for blood for transfusions rise.

Donating blood is quick, easy and like I said only takes a couple hours. Then the rest of the day or evening you can be the hero you are and where the sticker that tells the world that you are a hero, the one that says "I DONATED BLOOD TODAY!"

Time for Weasels Dancing in the Park again: The Oregon Ferret Shelter annual fundraiser!

This year’s fundraiser for the Oregon Ferret Shelter maybe the most important yet! Weasels Dancing in the Park is not only to help fund the Oregon Ferret Shelter, a “NO KILL” Ferret Shelter in Oregon City, but I believe we will also be talking about our support AGAINST HR 669.

I’ve been a supporter and volunteer for the Oregon Ferret shelter for many years now. (16, I think) But, my wife and I think that this is for a very good cause. I think “NO KILL” shelters are the only way pets should be handled. Too many families are forced to give up their furry family members because of relocation issues. (Just in case you don’t know California has a law making Ferrets illegal)

Now, this is where HR 669 comes in and why we are so against it! HR 669 outlaws basically all ownership of pets in the United States and then it will later determine which pets are exceptions to the rule. Do you want the government telling you what kind of pets you can or can’t own? (I certainly don’t)

Now, as for the fun! The Weasels Dancing in the Park is an event that has been held every year to help raise money for the Ferret Shelter. There is music, games, and even an auction with some seriously great stuff at rock bottom auction deals and ALL the money goes to the shelter!

The music is donated (by me) and the items for the auction were donated by many different companies. In the past there has even been a veterinarian on site giving free examinations of your furry little friends. Even if you aren’t a ferret owner, don’t hesitate to come by as many people are curious and most everyone there will gladly answer your questions for you about their furry family members.

Hope to see you there this Sunday August 22nd from 10am-4pm at Hammerle Park in West Linn, Oregon. Make sure you bring water for you, your family, and your pets. Don’t forget to pack a lunch as this is an all day event and though at some past events we have had a BBQ it is never guaranteed as it is done by a 3^rd party volunteer.

Beaverton, Oregon and Beyond from Todd’s Eyes – The Portland Children’s Museum

The Portland Children’s Museum has been around since the 1940s and started out in a house. Heck it was even still in a house when I took my oldest daughter there when she was 3 or 4 years old. But, since then it has grown and grown big time.

There are rooms for young kids from age two through about age 10. Water discover, clay room, on stage, veterinarian room, and even a construction room where kids can start with blue prints and then build their own structure.

My two youngest thought it was a blast and really didn’t want to leave, but we were coming up on closing time and had been there for four hours when we finally left. If you have kids between the ages of two and 10, I would suggest this to you. There is a cost, but I’m not sure this still applies, but when my oldest was going when she was younger you could check out a card at the library that got you in for free for the day.
